Homeless Dinner with the Eighth Grade

Thank you eighth graders for the wonderful job at the homeless meal on Friday night. The staff from the United Methodist Church really appreciated your good work. It was especially impressive to have a group of enthusiastic dishwashers. You were also very helpful when it came to serving and giving our guests eye contact. We sometimes forget that the needy of this community do not often get looked in the eye or touched by others.
Thank you for taking a risk and reaching out beyond your comfort zone. It made a big difference in many lives.

One of our guests was expressing his frustration at not being able to find work. After talking to him for a while it became apparent that he was very intelligent but was also dealing with a mental health issue. It was clear why he was not being hired and I was saddened by the realization that mental illness is often the cause of homelessness. I don’t know what the answer is to this problem, but I was glad that our eighth graders could at least bring him a good meal and smile.

Joseph, Peter and Lori M., Marissa and Virginia M., Richard, Danielle, and Gemma F., Robbie, Jimmy, and Diane D., Chuck and Thor E., Jake and Lisa L., Nathan L., Jack D., Mary and Mark N., Nicholas and Don H. were our cooks, servers, and clean-up crew. You are an amazing group of people!
Thank you also to The Morley family for providing food for our meal. It takes many hands!

We were able to send every guest home with a lunch. One of our guests, who is quite a character, was checking out all of the lunches and was especially excited about the big meat sandwiches that were on the sourdough bread. Whoever made those lunches made our friend Trish very happy. Thanks! They loved that the lunches were all different and they were making trades just like you do at the lunch tables. It was enjoyable to watch their excitement, and please know that your act of love was very appreciated.
Thank you!
